First robotically assisted heart surgery in Serbia and the Balkans

Following the success in Poland, we are proud to share another significant milestone in the advancement of cardiac surgery in Europe - one to which we have actively contributed. On December 18, 2025, at the “Dedinje” Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in Belgrade, the first robotically assisted heart surgery in Serbia and the Balkans was successfully performed, marking a historic moment for modern medicine in the region.

The procedure was led by Prof. Dr. Slobodan Mićović, Head of Cardiac Surgery, together with Clinical Assistants Dr. Miroslav Miličić and Dr. Bogdan Okiljević, under the expert supervision and mentorship of Prof. Dr. Piotr Suwalski, one of Europe’s most experienced cardiac surgeons in the field of robotically assisted surgery.

Using the MicroPort MedBot robotic system, the surgical team successfully performed a minimally invasive myocardial revascularization through small incisions, without opening the chest and without the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass machine. This advanced approach enables greater precision, enhanced safety, and significantly reduced surgical trauma, resulting in faster and easier postoperative recovery for the patient.
